Experience Meditation And Yoga For A Healthy Lifestyle

By Samantha Jones

There has always been a mystery about meditation and yoga. But here is a simple introduction to an activity that has been practiced for thousands of years. It is easy to begin to adopt a calmer and healthier life.

Initially, there were both religious and spiritual connotations attached but today you do not have to follow any specific beliefs. All types of cultures have been involved. It is open to all.

Yoga involves both a mental and a physical approach. It consists of several poses, known as asanas, meditation and breath control. If you are involved in a more classical form, then you may choose a mantra to chant. This is often a special word or phrase that has pleasant memories or vibes for you. It has a special meaning. Continually repeat the word or phrase as you sit quietly. Your mind may begin to drift but continue to repeat the mantra and your focus should return. Start to associate the repeating of the mantra with a feeling of inner calm.

These poses that people doing yoga pursue are shapes designed to help relaxation. Some are well known, like the cat pose and the locust pose. Others are called the butterfly, the cobra, the cradle and the lunge. These positions help to improve posture and strengthen the body.

There are several kinds of meditation and are followed by many different cultures and religions. But there are common principles. It is about paying attention and focusing your awareness. Someone who meditates is trying to bring the mind and body into harmony. At the same time they are striving for inner peace and well being.

Followers of meditation believe that focusing the mind leads to increased concentration. This results in better performance in both work and leisure. It helps to enhance the senses, whether it is in art, music, sex or food. Paying more attention usually results in a greater sense of enjoyment. The mind calms down.

It takes a matter of minutes to learn the basic principles. First, sit in a comfortable position. The back should be straight. Next, breathe deeply and make sure you follow the breath out. You can do this at any time during the day. If you follow this procedure first thing in your morning schedule then you will be waking from a relaxed sleep and have a mind devoid of concerns or worries. You may prefer to go through your process at your lunchtime break or in the evening before you go to bed. Try to select the same time each day.

Find a comfortable area to meditate. You can walk around but there may be other distractions. Choose a place with happy memories or special vibes. You could set up an alter if you choose a room in your home. This will assist your concentration that should result from a better focus. An alter may not necessarily have a religious focus although you can place sacred scripts on it. You could also include personal pictures, flowers, candles or statues. Wherever you choose for meditation and yoga, you will find a satisfying and disciplined form of relaxation.
